Borough parents and carers applying for places for their children at nursery, primary, junior or secondary schools can put forward their preferences online any time from now in order to apply for a place for September 2014 entry. Apply on-line here.
This year is the first time applications made for nursery and junior schools will also be accepted online.
Anyone with children in Sutton must apply through Sutton Council before the deadline of Thursday 31 October 2013 for secondary school places and Wednesday 15 January 2014 for primary, junior and nursery school places. Parents who miss these deadlines risk not getting a school of their preference.
Parents who apply online will receive early access to the notification of the outcome, no risk of forms going missing in the post, no postage costs, and a safe, secure online system.
There is also an online guidance booklet which outlines the full application process and explains what parents need to do in order to apply for a school place for their child. Parents can view this, the new home to school distance checker, watch a tutorial video, and apply online at www.sutton.gov.uk/admissions.
Parents without internet access at home can use the internet for free at any local library or attend assisted sessions in the Library @ the Phoenix Centre, Wallington, on Monday 16 September 9.30am-1.30pm and Tuesday 17 September 2-6pm; and at the Civic Offices, Sutton on Wednesday 25 September 2-6pm and Thursday 26 September 9.30am-1.30pm. Let us have a purpose built Cheam Leisure Centre
Users of Cheam Leisure Centre will be aware that recently some money has been spent on the Centre improving the Reception area and the changing rooms.
The Leisure centre is however old and desperately needs work to be done on it to bring it up to the standards that residents have a right to expect in the 21st century.
These are the standards to be found in the Westcroft Centre in the east of the Borough.

Council intends increasing fees for Residents’ Parking Permits
In a letter to the editor of the Sutton Guardian this week, Cllr Tony Shields writes on the increase in Residents’ Parking permit fees. He writes:
Page fifty nine of last weeks Sutton Guardian (July 11th) carried a public notice from The London Borough of Sutton about an increase in the costs of residents parking permits , the latest hike is some ten per cent whacked on top of the already costly permits.
The Conservative team at Sutton Council voted against this stealth tax at the time but as Lib Dem councillors outnumber the Conservatives by some four to one the odds of common sense prevailing are stacked against the taxpayer.
I am fed up with seeing residents predated upon to raise extra revenue for this wasteful council.
I urge all residents within the parking zones to lodge their objection to this inflation busting ten per cent hike in charges to me and I will see your views are submitted by the cut off date of 1st August.
Councillor Tony Shields, Sutton South ward, Conservative, Sutton Council

Steve O’Connell, London Assembly Member for Sutton & Croydon raised the issue of Crossrail2 and Tramlink coming to Sutton at Mayor’s Question Time
Earlier this week in Mayor’s Question Time, Steve O’Connell pushed the Mayor to provide greater connectivity to the residents of Sutton by linking it to Crossrail 2. Sutton is the only London borough that has no Tube, London Overground, Tramlink or Crossrail connections and is currently not included into the Crossrail 2 plans. Steve O’Connell asked the Mayor to extend Crossrail 2 to Worcester Park, and look into linking it to any Tramlink extension into Sutton.
“Crossrail 2 is a fantastic project and will be of great benefit to South West Londoners and to Sutton residents in reducing journey times to Central London as well as improving connectivity to the Northern Line. Boris Johnson backed my suggestion that Crossrail 2 and the Tramlink should extend and be linked at Worcester Park giving even greater connectivity for Sutton and South London.
“I also pushed the Mayor to continue his work of extending the Tramlink to Sutton and Crystal Palace in light of the new financial settlement for Transport for London. The Mayor went even further by suggesting that Sutton might be included in London Overground or even Underground plans in the near future.

London Mayor Boris Johnson with Paul Scully Conservative Parliamentary candidate on a recent visit to Sutton.
In a letter to the Sutton Guardian, Paul Scully, Conservative Parliamentary candidate highlights some of the excellent examples of successful small businesses that we have in Sutton. The multimillion pound investments are crucial but equally entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of the borough providing jobs and opportunities and ensuring that we have a thriving local economy. He writes:
“Dear Sir
Boris Johnson’s recent visit to Sutton enabled me to show him how local businesses are taking the lead in improving the town centre through Successful Sutton. They are far better placed to set and deliver a vision for business in Sutton than politicians. The key issues raised by local retailers were their support for the tram extension and high business rates.
I was delighted to take him to Tazza coffee shop because it has a great story to tell. United Life Church wanted to run a business at the heart of the community to be able to bring people and businesses together in the middle of Sutton. So the town centre ends up with a community hub, a successful business and excellent coffee. That’s definitely win/win.
After the usual bustle of a Boris walkabout on the High Street, pausing only to check the tennis score on the big screens on Trinity Square, we met the owners of Uno Tapas who have decided to invest in Sutton rather than their home town of Croydon. As well as the multimillion pound schemes, these independent businesses are the sorts of positive examples that we need to build on to revitalise our Borough as a whole, not just limiting our ambitions to Sutton town centre.

Council intends increasing fees for Residents’ Parking Permits
At a recent Environment and Neighbourhoods Committee, an agenda item was the discussion to implement new charges for residents’ permits, visitor’s vouchers and the extension of the restricted hours of operation in Sutton Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ). You can read the agenda item here and the supporting documents from here.
Councillor Eric Allen (Nonsuch) argued that the permit charges increase was way above inflation.
It was reported that there had been no increase in these charges for the last two years and at infrequent times before that. Since charges had not been reviewed on a regular annual basis until now, and parking charges needed to cover the costs of maintaining the CPZ, the new charges reflected the balance that needed to be achieved for the parking account.
The Committee then:
Resolved: (i) That the proposed increase in charges for residents permits, visitor vouchers and the progressively higher charges for a second, third and fourth vehicle be implemented.
Cllr Eric Allen and Cllr Tony Shields dissented on this resolution.
We remain concerned that this represents an increase of at least 10% and that residents have a right to expect a reasonably set fee that does not price them out of parking close to their home.
If you agree, please take a few minutes to sign our on-line petition here.
