Here is some advance notice of intended road work in the area. TfL (Transport for London), through their contractors, will be carrying out essential road surface maintenance works on the A217 St Dunstan’s Hill between Lumley Road and Alma Crescent. To ensure the safety of road users and personnel who will be carrying out these works, it will be necessary to close the A217 St Dunstan’s Hill between Lumley Road and Alma Crescent during these works.
The road closure will be put in place during the working times only and will be phased to close one direction of traffic (carriageway) at a time to minimise disruption to members of the public.
The completed works will bring benefits to road users by eliminating cracks, rutting and pot holes on the carriageway and also reduce the need for large scale maintenance of this road surface in the near future.
The works will be carried out over night and are planned to begin on Monday 22 July 2013 for approximately 2 weeks or till the work is completed . In agreement with the London Borough of Sutton, the working hours will be from 21:00 to 05.00.
The northbound closure will carried out first for up to 5 nights and during this time southbound traffic will not be affected. The southbound closure will follow for up to 5 nights in a similar way.
During the times when the road closure is in place the traffic will be diverted as follows:
- For traffic travelling northbound towards Rose Hill roundabout: diversion will be via A232 High Street Cheam, A2043 Malden Road, A24 London Road, A24 Stonecot Hill and B279 Sutton Common Road;
- For traffic travelling southbound towards Cheam Village: diversion will be via A217 Oldfields Road, A217 Reigate Avenue, B279 Sutton Common Road, A24 Stonecot Hill, A24 London Road, A2043 Malden Road and A232 High Street Cheam.
All diversions will be clearly signposted locally, during the working times only. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times during the works.
Every effort will be made to ensure that noisy operations are completed before midnight but we should explain that vehicle reversing warning beepers are essential safety devices to protect operatives.
Keeping London moving
Transport for London is firmly committed to minimising disruption. We have worked closely with our contractor, EnterpriseMouchel, and the London Borough of Sutton in order to reduce the impact of these works on road users, local residents and businesses as far as possible.
You will appreciate that a certain level of disruption is inevitable, and TfL apologises in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused as a result of these essential works. Barbecue this weekend? Take care and follow the advice from the London Fire Brigade
The following advice comes from the London Fire Brigade, which has issued an urgent ‘barbecue blaze’ warning. Forecasters are expecting a heat wave to kick in at the weekend, prompting fears that the number of barbecue blazes could jump. The Brigade said there were four fires in the space of two and a half hours last Sunday, all involving gas barbecues.
The London Fire Brigade’s Head of Operations, Prevention and Response Dave Brown said:
“With the hot weather, as well as the Wimbledon final and Lions rugby match this weekend I’d imagine a few people will be planning barbecues. We’re concerned if people don’t take care there could be a spate of barbecue fires that could easily be prevented with a little common sense.
“Barbecues are fine as long as you take a few sensible steps, such as lighting them well away from anything that could catch fire and never leaving them unattended. It’s important to take care with gas barbecues too as gas can explode when exposed to heat. It’s also important to read the manufacturer’s instructions on your barbecue and check that all joints are tightened.”
This weekend is forecast to be the hottest of the year with temperatures set to reach 29C in the capital.
London Fire Brigade’s top barbecue safety tips:
• Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies
• Barbecues must be placed on level ground so they don’t tip over
• Only use approved barbecue fuel or fire lighters. Never use petrol or paraffin.
• When you have finished cooking, make sure the barbecue is cool before you try to move it.
• Empty the spent ash on to bare garden soil – never put it in the dustbin.
For gas barbecues:
• If using gas, store gas cylinders outside, away from direct sunlight and frost.
• Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder.
• After cooking, turn the gas supply off first and then the barbecue control. This will stop any gas from leaking.
• Make sure all joints are tightened, safe and secure

Paul Scully Conservative PPC in discussion with Peter Mattey (Chairman) and resident at the BSCRA AGM
BSCRA (Belmont & South Cheam Residents Association) held their AGM last evening at Aitken Hall at St Andrews
Church, Northey Avenue, Cheam.
Belmont and Cheam Councillors David Hicks and Jonathan Pritchard were joined by Paul Scully, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate in Sutton and Steve O’Connell (Sutton & Croydon London Assembly Member) in a well-attended hall to see officers elected and to hear the progress of the Association through the year.
The audience also received a talk from Chief Inspector Nick Collins who gave an update on the Local Policing Model and how this would impact upon Safer Neighbourhood Teams in the respective wards. This was followed by a question and answer session.
There was an interesting slide-show of old postcards and photographs that showed the changes in the area of the past 80 years or so. An update was provided on recent planning applications and new ones that have been added to the list.
There was also a request for new volunteers to act as “road stewards” as there were just a few spaces remaining. The agenda had been kept shorted to allow for more questions and answers and topics included
- Traffic and Parking
- Environment
- Planning
