After a marathon session lasting all of Saturday, Philippa Stroud was chosen by Sutton & Cheam Conservatives to fight Paul Burstow to become the next MP for the constituency.
Philippa beat a very strong field and I look forward to working with her to ensure her victory whenever the election is called. Her role as head of the think tank “Centre for Social Justice” will bring new ideas to the constituency and I am sure that residents of Sutton will be able identify with her, the down-to-earth approach that she has and the principles that she shares with my colleagues.
I wasn’t able to attend the selection meeting and was surprised that Richard Willis did not stand. Where can we find out some of Phillipa’s views? There is nothing on the S & C Tory website. I have heard she is strongly anti-abortion, a position for which I could not vote! And I have NEVER not voted Tory – even voted for the dreadful Lady O!
Instead of wasting time with a-lists, gold-lists and whatever lists, all imposed by Central office, we should have selected a local high-profile councillor to take on Burstow. We have enough talent without importing it from outside.

While I’m not too keen on the “a-list” etc, I do hope other sceptics of the system will keep this separate from the candidate.
Philippa has a lot of relevant experience and skills to bring to the campaign to win back Sutton & Cheam, will make a good MP and has a very friendly, genuine character (from what I picked up on talking with her).
WILL MS STROUD BE MOVING TO SUTTON IF SHE BECOMES MP? BURSTOW’S HUGE STRENGTH IS THAT HE IS LOCAL, KIDS GO TO LOCAL SCHOOL, HE USES THE SAME BRUTALLY AWFUL TRAIN SERVICE AS EVERYONE ELSE, EVERY DAY…
SO SAD THAT SOMEONE FOR WHOM I COULD NEVER BRING MYSELF TO VOTE, HAS BEEN CHOSEN. SHE SOUNDS THE WORST OF ALL WORLDS – WISHY WASHY SOCIAL POLICY, YET VIRULENTLY ANTI ABORTION.
THIS SELECTION HAS MADE ME WANT TO ACTIVELY WORK FOR BURSTOW’S CAMPAIGN, EVEN THO I AM A CONSERVATIVE!
It worry’s me that people can be so anti someone who not only have they never meet but who they also only seem to know one item of information about.
I stand firmly against the idea of her being wishy washy! She is a powerful, down to earth and insightful woman.
Despite having always voted Labour its is purely down to her and my faith in her ability and appointing that i will vote conservative to see her win as the best person for the job.
