Yesterday John Cleese tweeted from his home in the Caribbean that London was not really an English city any more.
London is the greatest city in the world for a number of reasons. I moved to our capital city for the opportunities and lifestyle that only London can provide. I moved from another UK town but London attracts people from around the world who add so much to our economy, our culture and our communities.
John Cleese may believe that London is no longer an English city but how do we define English? It may not be the first choice of a location scout for Midsomer Murders but was London ever like that? The English borrow and adapt from around the world mainly on the back of being a maritime trading island. It is true that London plays in a global league, competing against the likes of New York, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, much like Liverpool and Tottenham will be vying to be Champions of Europe which will trump Manchester City’s Premiership title. But that doesn’t make London any less connected with the rest of the UK.
Britishness can now be defined by our shared values; tolerance, respect, pragmatism and resourcefulness especially in difficult times. Londoners don’t worry about whether their neighbours have three generations behind them living within the neighbourhood before accepting them. Instead we welcome newcomers, recognising how change helps us to keep up to date and fresh, just like any sensible business, club or family.
This does not mean that we should not have a robust immigration policy. The failure to even allow reasonable debate about immigration under the last Labour government, stirred up concern and unrest, some of which fed into the Brexit debate. We need a fairer immigration system which attracts people with the skills we need, no matter where they are from.
Entrepreneurs and skilled workers should be able to contribute to the UK and make the most of opportunities whether they are from India, America or France.
Ending Freedom of Movement as we leave the EU will allow us to strike the right balance but in doing so we should not allow commentators to conflate this with rhetoric that just perpetuates division. People are rightly concerned about how our hospitals and schools will cope with an increasing population but they are also worried about how they will be staffed. We need to concentrate on getting the balance right in a positive, constructive debate rather than alienating people whose first language may not be English, whose skin colour may be different or whose faith may not be Church of England.
That’s the tolerance and pragmatism that makes me English, some 67 years after my Catholic Burmese father with an Irish surname disembarked at Southampton docks to start a new life away from military dictatorship, in England, the country that he had admired from afar.
John Cleese said “English”, not “British”; there’s a world of difference. Anyone can be ‘British’ now; ‘English’ is indefinable but unmistakable.
As for London (and I’m a Londoner by birth and heritage), it’s a dirty, dangerous, ugly and hugely overcrowded place now where it’s almost impossible to live a decent life of quiet enjoyment.
It’s definitely unEnglish…
London is an minority majority city, I was born in Waterloo, raised in Brixton.
I’m now in Sutton which used to be a desirable location.
Sutton is know in the midst of white flight due to the onslaught of Asian immigration, every house bar few in last few years has been bought by Asians.
Government since 1970 have been sorting immigration yet it never ends.
People like Paul Scully are scared to tell the truth, which is that London now is not some wonderful multiculteral melting pot, but instead a state enforced cesspit.
Thanks to The Brexit reuse, we now deny easy passage to white Christmas from Europe, instead we’ve hot nearly 800000 Hindus and Muslims arriving every year, all because no one would admit that the dwindling majority fought tgat Brexit would stopped them becoming a racial and culteral minority.
I fear that still the facts are hushed up, unreported or debated, our courts now forbid it, hence the white European scapegoat.
We get multiculturalism rammed down our throats always being told it is a great thing to behold. Slowly watching the islamification of London (and definitely sutton). Its strange that those who are unhappy about the pace and extent are labelled racist, why ??
First I visited London in 2002 and I was amazed. The people were so friendly, smiling, polite and helpful. But I do not know what happened to the nice, friendly people within 2 decades. They became aggressive, racist.
Imagine, you are dressed all black or red or yellow. Will you look beautiful? Never. Colours make us look beautiful, so do different faces and nations.
I understand you. You want majority to be English. You can not imagine our country. Russians living in our country make us speak Russian to them. They ignore our language and knowing it they never speak the state language and the language of majority. But in the UK everybody speaks English, celebrates your holidays. It is a great respect.
You want to be mono-country. Think about it. If God wanted he could have created all nations in different planets. God wants us to be different but live together, to learn from one another, to make friends and to help one another. I assure you , there are bad people and good people. You can never say bad nation or good nation. Look ate your family and relatives’, friends’ neighbours’ families. Are all family members the same? Of course not. Children born from one mother and father are so different. One is good natured, the other bad-natured.
You should visit our country, Azerbaijan and see tolerance. I wish to see the same smiling faces, helpful and friendly people in he UK when I visit your country.
God considers us equal that is why he sent Covid-19 to the Earth not to one country. Let us try to overcome the virus and I am sure everybody will be happy, calm, friendly.
I thing the virus has made people hate each other. Life is so short. Let us love not hate. Hating other nations you spoil your mood, spoiling your mood you spoil your day, spoiling your day you make harm on your nerves and you health.
I had to write a couple of sentences. They who do not want to see other nations, especially muslims ban their coming and living in the UK. It would be more honest rather than accepting other nationalities to the UK to prove your being tolerant, democratic country. Just ban other nations , especially muslims who are not your enemies at all and make them hate you as you hate them. Close your borders, do not cooperate with other countries, including muslim and ne a mono nation. I am sure you will call for cooperation all countries, including muslim a few years later.
