The old Victoria House site at North Cheam will be redeveloped
After many years standing empty and unused, the derelict Victoria House site in North Cheam will be replaced by an eight storey development containing shops and 75 flats.
Nonsuch Ward Councillor Eric Allen spoke at Development Control Committee on Wednesday evening. Giving his support to the project, he said: “For many years the current building has been a blot on the landscape of North Cheam and has given a very poor impression of Sutton.
“This redevelopment will be a major benefit to North Cheam.”

High grass on the roundabout on the A217 was a potential driving hazard
Drivers may have been forgiven thinking they were about to embark upon a safari as they approached the Belmont roundabout on the A217. Cllr Peter Geiringer (Belmont) complained to Reigate and Banstead council about the dangers of the overgrown grass on the roundabout.
He said: “The grass is really dangerous, someone could be killed. Cars swinging round coming from Sutton and looking to go to Morden are blinded from traffic coming from Banstead. There could be a very serious accident unless this is cut as a matter of urgency. I have never seen grass as high as this.”
Reigate and Banstead Council heeded Cllr Geiringer’s warning and sent contractors down to the roundabout on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the council advised that grass cutting was scheduled along the whole length of the A217 between Banstead Cross Roads and Belmont roundabout on Thursday 20 June but on receipt of photographs sent, decided to advance the grass cutting by two days.
Unfortunately, we notice that whilst some grass was cut, particular areas, which contribute to the hazard, were left untouched and Cllr Geiringer has brought this to their attention.

Steve O’Connell, London Assembly Member writes in the Sutton Guardian this week:
With many others, I recently attended the Open Day at Sutton Police Station, which was a great success and a measure of the high regard that Sutton people have for their local police.
Those residents will be delighted that we will see 48 more officers on the beat in local policing than we did in 2011. That’s pretty impressive when budgets are tight and numbers elsewhere in the country are being cut.
Over 2000 more officers are being brought into local policing in London. That means that we will have 26,000 PC’s in the capital, the largest number the Met has ever seen.
It therefore astounds me to see the recent claim that Sutton has lost officers and is reducing the frontline. This is simply not true. We must stop scaremongering by peddling misleading figures. You simply cannot compare present police numbers with those at 2010; it’s like comparing apples with oranges. To compare like for like, you must use 2011 figures. Many of the roles filled by local officers in 2010 are now filled by civilians and also significantly, by central teams.
We have an excellent local police service, well led, and its blue line is getting even thicker under Boris.

Surface car parks in Sutton
A number of residents have raised concern about the state of the road surfaces in car parks across the London Borough of Sutton.
Conservative Councillors raised this with the relevant Council department and understand that Parking Services recently carried out a survey in regard to the condition of all nine of Sutton surface car parks. Resurfacing work has been identified in seven of them.
Parking Services is looking to secure capital funding to progress with the required repairs. Once the funding has been approved a schedule of works will be planned and carried out at their earliest convenience.
Surface car parks are busy and likely to get more so with the proposed sell off of Brighton Road car park. At a time when we are doing our best to help residents, local businesses and community organisations, you would think that funding, accrued from parking fees, could be better utilised to look after the existing infrastructure rather than squandering it on perceived vanity projects around the Borough.
