Sutton GPs approve consultation on St Helier cuts
Sutton Conservative Councillors Group were disappointed with the Sutton Commissioning Group’s decision to back consultation on the Better Services Better Value recommendations for acute care in South West London that would see St Helier Hospital downgraded to a community hospital.
It was mildly encouraging though to see that the proposals did not have the overwhelming support of Sutton’s GPs and those that did back consultation seemed to have ignored the epidemiological statistics that show St. Helier is on a site that continues to serve an area of relative deprivation and thus continues to fulfil the purpose for which it was originally built.
St Helier unlike the other hospitals it was in competition with has suffered from lack of investment as evidenced by its dated buildings and infrastructure. Local Liberal Democrat politicians have claimed to have saved it on numerous occasions and have offered all kind of help short of practical assistance.
Sutton Conservative Councillors will continue to press for the retention of vital services at St. Helier and will back our PPC’s campaign to ensure that St Helier continues to provide first-rate healthcare for the foreseeable future.

TfL proposes to amend and increase parking times in free parking bays on Red Routes
TfL (Transport for London) is proposing to change all existing red route free parking bays from 20 minute max stay to 30 minutes max stay. This fits with the Mayor’s manifesto to encourage town centre shopping.
Cllrs Graham Whitham and Jonathan Pritchard welcomed the Mayor’s announcement and were looking forward to Sutton Council getting on with implementing to help local businesses in Cheam once the consultation process has completed.
This proposal is supported by the Mayor’s Transport Strategy (Policy 8 and Proposal 124) and the Mayor’s Manifesto ‘Investing in Transport’ and has been suggested as a way to allow more flexibility for shoppers and reduce negative impacts on businesses. It was felt that 30 minutes is appropriate to ensure a sufficient turnover of parking provision remains available.
NB: The TfL 20 minute loading bays would not be affected and other types of bay currently offering more than 20mins would also remain unchanged under both options

Lady Thatcher 1925 – 2013
Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has died “peacefully” at the age of 87.
David Cameron paid tribute to Lady Thatcher following the news that she died earlier today:
“It was with great sadness that I learned of Lady Thatcher’s death. We have lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister, and a great Briton.”
Lady Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the first woman to hold the role.
She will not have a state funeral but will be accorded the same status as Princess Diana and the Queen Mother.
The ceremony, with full military honours, will take place at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral.
