Potholes

After the inclement weather, potholes are being reported

After the recent inclement weather, comes the damage to the roads.   Our Conservative Ward Action Team members are spotting and reporting potholes across the Constituency.

The Council has a responsibility for the maintenance of the roads and prioritises its  resources to keep the public safe. However it is not able to repair all defects in the road surface unless classed as a pothole.

Pothole Definition

A pothole occurs when the surface of the road or footpath has been eroded and a hollow is formed. In determining the priority for repairing pot holes the Council considers the size and depth of the pothole; and which road it’s on. The aim is to address the most serious of potholes within 24 hours.

How are potholes formed?

Potholes are formed by water getting under the top layer of the road surface through cracks caused by traffic.

When temperatures plunge, the water freezes, expands and causes the surface to rupture. When the ice melts, it leaves an empty gap below the surface, which caves in when more vehicles drive over it and eventually forms a pothole.

Steve O’Connell hails victory on Wimbledon Loop

Steve O’Connell, London Assembly Member for Croydon and Sutton, today joined Sutton residents celebrating the news that their rail service would remain intact.

Services on the Wimbledon Loop via Sutton had been planned to terminate at Blackfriars station, following extensive remodelling of the track layout over the Thames as part of Network Rail’s Thameslink modernisation programme.

But today, following years of campaigning, it was announced that the service would continue north to St Pancras station and beyond.

Praising the efforts of everyone involved in the campaign, Mr O’Connell said:

“This is such good news for our residents who live around the Loop in Wimbledon and Sutton. I pay tribute to Stephen Hammond for his constant campaign towards this result. I am glad that we have been able jointly with councillors to persuade the Rail Minister to tell Network Rail to continue the through trains to St Pancras, the City, and Luton Airport. Moreover when Crossrail is completed in 2018, it will connect with Thameslink at Farringdon. This plan would have severed that connection for Sutton residents.”

Commenting on this news, Cllr Graham Whitham, Leader of the Conservative Opposition in Sutton said, “Thameslink is a vital link not just to towns north of London but for Eurostar and connections to Europe.  Working with Steve O’Connell, our GLA member and other colleagues, I am pleased that campaigning has resulted in the retention of this rail service”.

Grit Bins

Find Your Nearest Grit Bin

A number of residents have commented upon the Council strategy for gritting.  This link here will provide you with the logic for gritting roads.  Pavements sadly are another issue, but residents are encouraged to make use of the supply of free grit that the Council has made available recently.

It is very possible that you have used your supply.  Readers will recall that following pressure from local Conservative Councillors and the public in 2010, the council agreed to install more grit bins around the borough and provide additional grit for residents that could be collected from various points around Sutton

Where grit runs out, you can contact 020 8770 5070 - please quote the number on the top of the bin to enable Council workers to locate the bin and replenish the contents.

Readers might also find this link to a map of grit bins in the Borough.  Simply add your postcode to find the nearest grit bin.

Snow Alert – Schools close due to adverse weather conditions

Schools in Sutton always do their best to ensure they are open.  There will always be times when such accessibility has to be reconsidered.  Schools in Sutton took stock of current weather conditions and a number decided to close early today.

A number of other schools have made the same decision and, rather than repeating what is on a number of websites already, you can view the status of your school by clicking here.
