Recycling Your Christmas Trees

Recycling Your Christmas Trees

Dumped Christmas trees

We are already getting reports of fly-tipped Christmas Trees now that the festive season is over and decorations are coming down.

Ugly scenes like the dumped tree pictured clutter our streets and bring down our area. Sutton Council is collecting trees with green recycling bins from today onwards through to Saturday 1st February.

If you see any trees dumped in Sutton South or in any other areas get in touch with us and we will get it sorted. Also, if you see anyone dumping a tree, let us or the local Police Safer Neighbourhood Team know. The contact details are here.

Belmont Councillor Assists Vulnerable Resident

Cllr Pam Picknett outside Sutton Police Station

A Sutton councillor showed ‘great community spirit’ by looking after a missing dementia sufferer and helping her to get home.

Belmont Conservative ward councillor Pam Picknett was sitting next to a 90-year-old woman on the 407 bus when she was on her way to a Council Scrutiny meeting on Wednesday evening.

Cllr Picknett, whose mother suffered from dementia, became concerned when the woman kept asking her if she was going in the right direction. Taking the lady to Sutton police station, she was shocked to discover she had been reported as missing just half an hour before.

She has been praised by the police for picking up on the woman’s vulnerability.

Cllr Picknett said it was important for people to look out for the signs of dementia and charities such as Age UK were running campaigns raising awareness of the illness.

A Sutton police spokesman said: “Police would like to thank Cllr Picknett for the way she picked up on this woman’s vulnerability and then proceeded to take responsibility for helping to keep this woman safe.

“The councillor’s actions illustrate the great community spirit that exists, but doesn’t often make the headlines, in Sutton borough.”

War Memorials Scheduled For Repair And Tidy

War Memorials Scheduled For Repair And Tidy

War MemorialsWar Memorials are an important feature in our society.  They are a visual reminder to generations of the ultimate sacrifice that some have made in the defence of their country, other nations and freedom in general.  It is important that such memorials are respected, maintained and cared for.

There have been several occasions over recent years when Conservative councillors have requested that work be undertaken on war memorials.

In September/October comment cards left at various local committees were collected up.  These comment cards included requests for a general clean up of the memorials and suggestions for planting shrubs and poppy seeds at the various sites in question.

Conservatives councillors welcome the Council’s long overdue acknowledgement of this and the scheduled plans to repair and tidy up various war memorials across the borough including Cheam, Carshalton, Wallington, Sutton, Worcester Park and Belmont.

The works will be carried out by a professional contractor.  Sutton’s Parks  team will be planting shrubs and flowers in existing beds and the contractor will be contracted to do all the professional repairs required for each site in time for next years Remembrance Day.
