Let’s Ban Spitting In Public

Cllr Graham WhithamConservative Councillor Graham Whitham, leader of the opposition in Sutton, has slammed the council for its stance on the “disgusting” habit of spitting and is calling on Sutton Council to ban spitting in public.  Councillor Whitham has warned about the anti-social habit and the link with the spread of Tuberculosis (TB) in London – which last month was declared the European capital of TB. The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists spit, as well as coughs and sneezes, as one of the ways in which the contagious and potentially fatal disease spreads.

Councillor Whitham said: “Whilst we welcome the lower rates of TB incidence in Sutton the overall trend in the UK and in particular London is remorselessly upward.  You cannot put a ring fence around the borough to keep out airborne infections. With councils able to take a firmer stance over littering, it is negligent of the council to fail to impose the necessary framework to enforce against this disgusting and dangerous habit”.

A council spokesperson said: “Although spitting is not hygienic it is not considered to be a significant risk factor for spreading infections such as TB compared to coughs and sneezes.  TB rates in Sutton are low and our public health team reports that instances have been decreasing since 2010, giving Sutton the second best rate in South West London.”

Council Urges Parents To Log On To Apply For School Places

Applying on-line for Schools

Borough parents and carers applying for places for their children at nursery, primary, junior or secondary schools can put forward their preferences online any time from now in order to apply for a place for September 2014 entry.  Apply on-line here.
This year is the first time applications made for nursery and junior schools will also be accepted online.

Anyone with children in Sutton must apply through Sutton Council before the deadline of Thursday 31 October 2013 for secondary school places and Wednesday 15 January 2014 for primary, junior and nursery school places. Parents who miss these deadlines risk not getting a school of their preference.

Parents who apply online will receive early access to the notification of the outcome, no risk of forms going missing in the post, no postage costs, and a safe, secure online system.

There is also an online guidance booklet which outlines the full application process and explains what parents need to do in order to apply for a school place for their child. Parents can view this, the new home to school distance checker, watch a tutorial video, and apply online at www.sutton.gov.uk/admissions.

Parents without internet access at home can use the internet for free at any local library or attend assisted sessions in the Library @ the Phoenix Centre, Wallington, on Monday 16 September 9.30am-1.30pm and Tuesday 17 September 2-6pm; and at the Civic Offices, Sutton on Wednesday 25 September 2-6pm and Thursday 26 September 9.30am-1.30pm. No appointment necessary, drop in at any time

We would like to hear about your experiences of applying for school places.  Please email us at info@cheamlive.com or complete the contact form here.

Let us have a purpose built Cheam Leisure Centre

Users of Cheam Leisure Centre will be aware that recently some money has been spent on the Centre improving the Reception area and the changing rooms.

The Leisure centre is however old and desperately needs work to be done on it to bring it up to the standards that residents have a right to expect in the 21st century.

These are the standards to be found in the Westcroft Centre in the east of the Borough.

Parking Permits

Council intends increasing fees for Residents’ Parking Permits

In a letter to the editor of the Sutton Guardian this week, Cllr Tony Shields writes on the increase in Residents’ Parking permit fees.  He writes:

Page fifty nine of last weeks Sutton Guardian (July 11th) carried a public notice from The London Borough of Sutton about an increase in the costs of residents parking permits , the latest hike is some ten per cent whacked on top of the already costly permits.

The Conservative team at Sutton Council voted against this stealth tax at the time but as Lib Dem councillors outnumber the Conservatives by some four to one the odds of common sense prevailing are stacked against the taxpayer.

I am fed up with seeing residents predated upon to raise extra revenue for this wasteful council.

I urge all residents within the parking zones to lodge their objection to this inflation busting ten per cent hike in charges to me and I will see your views are submitted by the cut off date of 1st August.
