Celebrating Success Awards 2013

The Celebrating Success Awards 2013 took place on Tuesday evening at the Holiday Inn, Sutton.  This ceremony recognises the achievements and progress that young people in care and those who have left, have made over the past year.  It was really good to see so many youngsters receive their certificates and to hear about some of their achievements.

Many were there with their parents or carers.  Conservative Councillors Moira Butt, Pam Picknett and Jonathan Pritchard also attended the event.  The certificates were presented by The Mayor of Sutton.  After the presentation there was a tasty buffet laid on by the Holiday Inn, music and dancing and an opportunity to talk with some of the youngsters about their progress.

Well done all involved in making this an interesting and happy evening – a good time was had by all.

Eye-Watering Cost Of Council Bosses To The Sutton taxpayer

Eye-Watering Cost Of Council Bosses To The Sutton taxpayer

Sutton Council bosses cost £8,750.00

Figures from pressure group the Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA) place the bill saddled to the local council tax payer for 120 Sutton Council chiefs on £50,000+ at £8.75million, writes the Sutton Guardian newspaper. This eye-watering sum is the equivalent of over £72,000 each.

The cost uncovered by the TPA does not come as a surprise to me having previously worked at Sutton Council.

For as long as I can remember, Sutton Conservative councillors have called upon the Council’s leadership to live according to its means, without enormously expensive pet projects like the loss-making £9million Sutton Life Centre and the bungled multi-million pound ‘revamp’ of Sutton High Street.

Sutton Council’s Liberal Democrat deputy bigwig, Councillor Colin Hall, has controversially said that the Council has been cutting costs over the last three years…but not enough it would seem, according to the TPA.

What about the pet projects Councillor Hall? And the rightly bottled £12million face-lift for the Civic Offices?

As a former employee of the Council, I saw first-hand how casual the political leadership was with public cash and how it failed to address the route causes of waste. It’s why I
resigned. Not content to let them simply carry on wasting our money, I will continue to fight along with Tony Shields and Heather Howell for a better deal for Sutton South council tax payers and also for the rest of the Borough.

Talking To Residents: Out And About With Paul Scully

Talking To Residents: Out And About With Paul Scully

Cllr Tony Shields, Campaigner Jason Hughes and PPC Paul Scully out canvassing

Yesterday, Cllr Tony Shields, myself and the Conservative team were out and about with Paul Scully, our parliamentary candidate for Sutton and Cheam.

Residents told Paul and team what they thought on local and national issues effecting them and
their families.

It’s always good to speak with local people and the
feedback was positive. Topics of interest ranged from local bin collection services, to concerns about immigration, the threat to St. Helier A&E and maternity services, local crime and antisocial behaviour and Britain’s relationship with the European Union.

One resident told us: “We haven’t seen the Liberal Democrat MP or his party round here in a long time. They seem to gone into hiding for some reason!”

Conservative PPC Paul Scully joins Cllr Graham Whitham & Jonathan Pritchard planting trees in Cheam Park

Conservative PPC Paul Scully joined Cllr Graham Whitham Jonathan Pritchard, and Cheam Ward Action Team member Holly Ramsey, to  undertake some tree planting in Cheam Park earlier today.  A crisp, but dry and sunny morning favoured the activity

It was pleasing to see yet again a good number of people and families coming out to assist in getting the trees planted.  This batch have augmented those planted last year.  The trees are funded from Public Realm monies granted by the Conservative-led Local Committee.

A thank you too to the Council’s Tree Specialists who gave up their time to prepare the ground, show us how to dig, remove compost, plant the trees, insert the stakes and refill.

The top end of the Recreation Park will be all the better for these trees and will be a joy for future generations of park and countryside lovers alike.

PPC Paul Scully visits Cheam Library on National Doodle Day

Friday was National Doodle Day and Cheam Library was doing its bit to support and promote the work of Epilepsy Action, a registered charity that provides resources to support everyone affected by epilepsy.

Cheam Library had set up a large area for doodling and a picture gallery for youngsters to hang their individual doodles.

Conservative Prospective parliamentary candidate Paul Scully and Cllr Jonathan Pritchard visited the library, undertook some doodles and chatted with other library users.  More to follow.

BREAKING NEWS: Brighton Road Car Park Up For Sale

BREAKING NEWS: Brighton Road Car Park Up For Sale

Cllr Tony Shields outside Brighton Road Car Park which is up for sale.

It emerged this afternoon that Sutton Council has plans to sell Brighton Road
car park to developers. For the Sutton Guardian’s coverage of the story click here.

This car park is of vital strategic
importance to the area, feeding into local places of work and enabling visitors to come to Sutton High Street, supporting local trade.

The plans are for Brighton Road car park to be turned into an office block. Whilst we support bringing more employment to Sutton, we still need to ensure we have the transport infrastructure to accommodate commuters by car – it’s all a matter of balance.

This stinks of a classic Liberal Democrat anti-car stitch up, hot on the tail of ensuring residents in Sutton South are still robbed of their free 200 parking hours.

This news has come as a particular shock to me as I have been working with another department in the Council to bring a fenced playground onto the green space outside the car park (see pictured above).

Recently, the committee that I chair (the Sutton South, Cheam and Belmont Local Committee) agreed to look into funding for this.

Rest assured, Jason, Heather and I will be speaking to local residents extensively to find out what people think. At this stage, we are very concerned that this has not been properly thought through and will impact upon residents and commuters who need a strategic parking facility. We’ll keep you informed, as ever.
