Boris Confirms LIP Funding For Sutton

Boris Confirms LIP Funding For Sutton

Cllr Graham WhithamGood news this morning from Conservative London Mayor Boris Johnson, who confirmed Sutton will continue to receive money for transport projects. At the Mayor’s regular Question Time this morning, Steve O’Connell, Sutton’s GLA member asked if Mr Johnson if he would continue to provide Sutton with local implementation project (LIP) funding.  The Mayor confirmed that he would.

Mr O’Connell said: “You may not have heard of TfL (Transport for London) LIP Funding, but it’s incredibly important in helping pay for much needed transport projects in your local area – such as crossings and bespoke roundabouts.

“Today the Mayor has confirmed that we will have a secure stream of LIP funding for the next three years. This cash will give Sutton the autonomy to build what we need locally by funding projects that residents want, rather than what a distant body like TfL might think we need.”

Commenting on this news, Conservative Group Leader Cllr Graham Whitham said:  “  I welcome this news for Sutton, especially following the destructive and negative comments and messages that were being spun by the LibDems.  This is a Conservative Mayor delivering on a promise to ensure appropriate funding for projects in our Borough”

Tricksters Try To Scam On Radon Gas

Tricksters Try To Scam On Radon Gas

Cllr Pam Picknett

Cllr Pam Picknett raised this issue of a potential scam at a recent Council Meeting

Councillor Pam Picknett (Belmont) has raised concerns that elderly and sick people are being targeted by tricksters who try to push the price down on their homes by claiming the area is a hot-spot for naturally occurring radioactive radon gas.

Councillor Pam Picknett said she has heard of at least two cases of people being told their homes were at risk from radon by purported potential buyers who contacted them directly rather than through their estate agent. She raised it at a council meeting last week to make other members aware of the scam.

Sutton Council and Public Health England say people should not be taken in by such claims and can buy a report from it stating the risk of radon contamination in their homes.

Radon is a radioactive gas given off by naturally occurring uranium deposits in the earth. It is more common in Cornwall and Cumbria but there are isolated deposits all over the country. According to Public Health England, no home in Sutton has more than a three per cent risk of radon contamination.

Cllr. Picknett said the scams took place in Wallington and Beddington.  She said: “Older people who put their properties on the market have been bullied by buyers who say radon has been detected in their properties. I’ve heard two cases of this and it is bullying.

“If you’re old, to be told something like this can be very frightening but it’s just people trying to force the price down.  The reason I raised it was to make sure other councillors are aware of this because they are clearly picking on vulnerable people.”

MEPs Reporting Back – Centre for Small Business

Syed KamallSyed Kamall MEP reports back from Europe and welcomes the founding of the Centre for Small Business, and is delighted to support the work it intends to do. In Britain we need people and groups like them to fight for the interests of small businesses against high taxes and regulations.

Small businesses represent nearly two-thirds of all employment in the UK and we should be doing all we can to help them grow, especially in the current global economic climate.
