MEPs Reporting Back – Sex Education Plans Blocked

MEPs Reporting Back – Sex Education Plans Blocked

Marina YannakoudakisMarina Yannakoudakis and fellow Conservative MEPs headed off proposals on “sexual and reproductive health and rights” which would see sex education become compulsory across Europe for children as young as four.

Plans by Portuguese MEP and Labour-ally Edite Estrela would enforce rules across the whole European Union relating to controversial issues such as abortion and contraception, with a proposal “to make sex education classes compulsory for all primary and secondary school children”. Estrela is the MEP who introduced plans for compulsory paid maternity leave which were also blocked by Marina.

As the proposals were about to be voted upon in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Conservative MEPs were the first to intervene to have the whole package referred back to the Gender Equality Committee with other parties backing the Conservative stance.

Marina said: “While there were many good suggestions in the report to do with women’s rights and equal treatment of gay, lesbian and trans-gender people, the EU should not be in the business of approving a set of rules making sex education compulsory for infants as soon as they leave nursery. That is a matter for member states – and most importantly for parents – to decide.”

Grit – Final Weekend To Get Some

scan0037.jpgIf you’ve not taken advantage of the Council’s grit offer – be quick! This is the final weekend.

For the fourth year running, Environment and Neighbourhoods will be providing 10kg of grit per household in the borough.

The grit is to enable residents to grit the footpath, pavement or road in front of their homes.

For the first time, the offer is also being made to local businesses so that they can keep the pavements in front of their premises free from grit too.

It can be collected from:

B&Q – Carshalton Road, Sutton (underground car park) – 7am – 5pm Saturday, 10am – 4pm Sunday
Woodcote Green Garden Centre and Nurseries – Woodmansterne Lane – 8.30am – 5pm Saturday, 10am – 4.30pm Sunday
Clockhouse – The Green at the Mount – 9am – 3pm Saturday and Sunday
Kimpton Park Way Reuse and Recycle Centre – 9am – 5pm Saturday, 9am – 2pm Sunday. (Please take a suitable container with you to collect the grit from this site). Each household or local business needs to provide proof of residency when they collect the grit. So please take your council tax, business rates (NNDR) or utility bills with you.
