Nonsuch Park nominated for UK’s Best Park 2016

Nonsuch Park has been nominated in the Fields in Trust UK’s Best Park, as voted by YOU! 2016 Award.

Fields in Trust is a national charity operating throughout the UK to safeguard recreational spaces and campaigning for better statutory protection for all kinds of outdoor sites. Fields in Trust have been protecting vital outdoor space for sport and recreation since 1925 when they were founded as the National Playing Fields Association, by King George V. They currently safeguard over 2,600 sites, including playgrounds, playing fields, and formal and informal parkland across 30,000 acres of the UK.

The UK’s Best Park Award gives the public the opportunity to vote for their favourite local green space; the public vote will run until the 9th November. The top park in each of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be shortlisted before the winner is announced at the Fields in Trust Awards Ceremony at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on 30th November.

I hope Sutton, Cheam and Worcester Park residents will get behind Nonsuch Park and vote for it here.

Celebrating Black History Month

Celebrating Black History Month

October was Black History Month and I was delighted to join Black History Month Sutton at their final event at the Robin Hood Centre on Saturday.

The finale brought the month’s activities and events to commemorate Black History Month and included excellent entertainment, such as live music from Skillosophy, the band featured in the picture above.

I want to thank Black History Month Sutton for inviting me to share in the celebrations and to learn more about what they have been doing to educate and raise awareness this Black History Month.

Election to the International Development Select Committee

Election to the International Development Select Committee

This afternoon I was pleased to be elected by fellow MPs to the International Development Select Committee.

I am looking forward to working to ensure our International Development programme works hand-in-hand with opportunities for international trade, tackles factors that contribute to global insecurity and migration, and continues to lead the way in meeting our responsibility as a leading world economy.

We have immediate pressures like Syria, but also ongoing concerns like drug-resistant malaria and the effects of climate change across Bangladesh and Burma.

I hope that I can help to ensure that we continue to lead the world in disaster relief and humanitarian aid, but also that people in Sutton and across the UK see value for money and the support going directly to those most in need.
